What is chronic stress?
Physical and mental stress occurs when you begin to have the imagined or real feeling of a pending danger lingering nearby.

The mind and body response that happens in your body, whether it's fight or flight, is the same! Your mind can’t tell the difference between real and imagined danger. 

​Short term this response is very useful, and needed, such as running away from a wild animal.

How can stress affect your mental health?
There are two types of stress: Acute stress and Chronic stress. Acute stress happens over a short time and can last anywhere from minutes, to hours (like running away from danger.) Once it’s gone, your body returns to normal. Chronic stress is the more dangerous version and can last anywhere from days or weeks to months.
 
Elevated levels of cortisol over prolonged periods of time can eventually cause serious  damage to your body and mind. Long term chronic stress has been linked to many conditions affecting people today.
